A growing share of buying research now starts with a question to ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, or Gemini instead of a search box. The answer comes back as a paragraph, not a results page — and either your brand is in that paragraph or it is not. Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the discipline of earning that placement: being known to AI systems, described accurately, and recommended when the question matches what you sell.
We build an AEO platform — Sourceable monitors four LLM engines around the clock — so this series is written from production data and daily practice, not theory.
How answer engines choose what to say
Assistants compose answers from two layers: what the model absorbed in training (your durable reputation across the open web) and what retrieval finds at answer time (pages, reviews, directories the engine can cite right now). AEO works both layers — corroborated entities and consistent facts for the first, citable, extraction-friendly content for the second. A brand that exists only on its own website effectively does not exist to either layer.
“In answer engines there is no page two. You are in the paragraph or you are invisible.”
The four failure modes we see in monitoring
Absence: the model has no idea you exist, so category questions never surface you. Confusion: it mixes you up with a similarly named company or describes what you did two pivots ago. Hallucination: it invents facts — wrong pricing, wrong location, services you do not offer. And omission: it knows you but recommends competitors, because their evidence is stronger. Each failure mode has a different fix, which is why measurement comes before tactics.
What actually moves the needle
In rough order of leverage: consistent, machine-readable facts about your organization everywhere (site, LinkedIn, directories, structured data); third-party corroboration — reviews and citations AI can verify; content shaped like answers — definitions, comparisons, price ranges, checklists; and original data nobody else has, which is the only content answer engines reliably cite rather than paraphrase.
The rest of this series covers the practical layers: how AEO differs from the SEO you already do, how to measure AI visibility, how to earn citations, and the structured-data foundation — ending with a 20-point checklist you can run this quarter.
