The hardest part of an AI product is rarely the model. It is the moment a user decides whether to trust what the model just said. That decision happens in the interface, and most AI interfaces are doing everything they can to lose it.
Across the AI products our design team has shipped, a handful of patterns consistently move users from wary to reliant.
Show your work
Sources, citations, and confidence indicators are not decoration — they are the trust surface. When an assistant answers from your knowledge base, linking the exact passages transforms the interaction from oracle to research partner. Users forgive wrong answers they can verify far more readily than right answers they cannot.
“Trust in AI is not earned by being right. It is earned by being inspectable when wrong.”
Make correction effortless
Every AI output should be editable, dismissible, or reversible in one action. The products users abandon are the ones where fixing the AI costs more than doing the task manually. Correction is also your best training data — design it as a feature, not an apology.
Set expectations before the first prompt
Empty states matter more in AI products than anywhere else. Show what the system is good at with concrete example prompts, and say plainly what it will not do. A user whose first attempt succeeds becomes an advocate; one whose first attempt fails rarely tries a second.
AI capability is becoming a commodity; trustworthy experience is not. The products that win will be the ones whose interfaces treat user skepticism as a design requirement rather than a marketing problem.
